8/9/09 Game recap: On the last Sunday in Spring League, Sac Lunch evened the score with Flying Hellfish, making up for the debacle of the first matchup. Pitcher/Manager Corey Fields pitched his record-setting 80th complete game, while the exciting batting title race between Eric "Tico" Torres and Chris Shrader wound down with Shrader easily earning his first title on the back of a 3-for-4 performance. However, this season Torres did prove himself to be anything but a "one season wonder", as many critics (and even his own GM Frank Marinara) had labeled him at the start of the season.

This season was yet another step in the direction of C-Minor Baseball Pants League. Despite a sputtering offense, Sac Lunch earned an 8-6 record, their first winning record in D-League. In fact, if a few close games had gone their way, Sac Lunch could have been crowned D-League champs. Not surprisingly, the team has decided to switch back to the classic yellow jerseys for summer season.

And of course, this season recap would not be complete without paying tribute to one of the most controversial and excitable players to ever don a Sac Lunch uniform. Joe Q brought a swagger and attitude often missing from this group of even-keel players. Rumors on the street were that GM Frank Marinara had him forced into retirement, most likely due to lingering issues over the infamous 2007 barfight at the Dugout Bar&Grille. Not to mention Liberty Park officials had been pressuring Marinara to "solve" the Joe Q problem. However, his legacy will never be forgotten. The memories are everwhere: disemboweling the trashcan in nearly every dugout, challenging the opposing team to a fight on many occasions, challenging Aaron to a fight in 2007, challenging Corey to a fight every other game, psychotic screams coming from right field...

Joe Q, you are an officer and a gentleman.

Final Record: 8-6 (.571)
Runs Scored: 133, Runs Against: 127

Game 13 - 8/2/09 - Result: W
Sac Lunch 23, Hillbillies 12

Recap: Pitching. Often overlooked, taken for granted... yet it is a crucial element in every game. Sac Lunch (themselves spoiled by having at least 3 quality pitchers on the roster) could only watch in agony and amusement as Hillbillies continued to roll out one shitty right-hander after another, each terrible is his own unique way. Not to be embarrased by the winless Hillbillies, the BallSacs finally cruised to a blowout win in front of a sellout crowd on Diamond 7. The fans are gearing up for an exciting finish in the close race for the batting title between Chris Shrader and Eric "Tico" Torres. Also, congratulations to Joe Q for breaking Ryan Abitheira's "Slowest Walk To Right Field" record. Joe Q's record now stands at 1:01, smashing Ryan's record by 11 seconds.

Game 12 - 7/26/09 - Result: L
Sac Lunch 6, Team Austin 7

Recap: The apocalyptic rainstorm that flew into Diamond 2 during the 6th inning was a major harbinger of things to come. The game had started out perfectly for Sac Lunch, even with a missing outfielder. Aaron Melton hit a true homerun, the first in... a long time, according to StatsLLC. Building a 6-1 lead heading into the 3rd inning, the game looked to be locked up as Team Austin fumbled with every ground ball hit their way. However, the terrible offense returned with Sac Lunch unable to muster more than a few hits for the duration. After the hellish rainstorm, Team Austin won the game on a walk-off single. With the majority of the team hitting below .500, Neptix.com has reportedly ordered these players to be fired and replaced with players fresh off the boat from the Dominican Republic. Manager Corey Fields has responded with his intention to keep the team intact for the final two games of this tumultuous season.

Sac Lunch 7, Cleveland Steamers 5

Recap: Sac Lunch regained form in another close game against Cleveland Steamers. Showing poise in a game devoid of drama, the bats stayed cold but the defense remained solid. Aaron Melton hit the game-winning triple in the 7th. Boof, Brad, and Eric "Tico" Torres were brilliant in the infield. 3 games to go.

Game 10 - 7/12/09 - Result: L
Sac Lunch 7, Flying Hellfish 10

Recap: As the season continues to spiral out of control, Manager Fields finds himself trying to salvage whatever is left from this shell of a team. The game on June 28th was quite possibly the most humiliating performance in Liberty Park's 25-year history. Manager Fields reportedly went into a psychotic rage upon viewing the stat sheet. This week, things were a little better, however the team managed to somehow give up 10 runs in one inning, another entry for the Liberty Park Hall Of Shame. Playing with a depleted roster, barely able to field an entire team, things looked good from the outset as the "Tornado Of Anger" Joe Q turned in an inspiring, Jaegermeister-fueled performance, hitting for power and effortlessly throwing out runners from right field. However, the aforementioned 4th inning ruined the effort, and the Sacs find themselves riding a 2-game losing streak back to the purgatory of .500.

Game 8 - 6/21/09 - Result: W
Sac Lunch 16, J. Edgars 7

Recap: A 6 out inning, dissention in the outfield, a blown lead... all of which contributed to one of the most confusing and surreal games in Sac Lunch history. Nonetheless, the Sacs finally reclaimed their offense on their way to a 16-7 dominating win, which kept them in the hunt for the D-League championship. Manager Corey Fields - nervous about vacating his team in the all-important showdown with The Saints next week - could be seen after the game huddled with interim manager Aaron Melton, most likely dissecting the game plan and lineup. Melton has been known to buck trends as a "think outside the box" manager, executing wildly experimental batting orders and game decisions, all of which are heavily discouraged by the veteran manager. Manager Fields had one simple instruction for his team as he walked out of Liberty Park: "Don't Lose".

Sac Lunch 3, Here For Beer 18

Recap: Playing against quite possibly the douchebaggiest team of all time, Sac Lunch shit the bed in a big way on Sunday evening in front of a sellout crowd on Diamond 7. Embarrasing is an understatement. Manager Corey Fields speculated that it was good the game was cut short, because several members of Sac Lunch were beginning to lose their cool, which would have led to ejections and/or suspensions. Joe Q stormed out of Liberty Park after screaming a postgame tirade to the media, as the rest of the team doused their inner fires with Bud Light.

Game 6 - 6/7/09 - Result: W
Sac Lunch 7, D&S Miller Transport 4

Recap: Sac Lunch's second season in D-League continued on the upswing Sunday night in the highly anticipated showdown with D&S Miller Transport. Already riding a 3-game winning streak, the Sacs again produced base hits when it mattered - with runners in scoring position. The defense was also stellar, particularly the "brick wall infield" trio of Eric "Tico" Torres, Boof, and Tom McGough. The stellar turnaround from a shitty 0-2 start to the season has several D-League analysts taking note, with some even projecting a 1st place finish. If the Sacs can pull off a victory over 1st place team Here For Beer next week, these predictions may prove accurate.

Sac Lunch 13, R U Wet? 1-888-RU-WET 8

Recap: Suffering from their usual problems in the field and at the plate, Sac Lunch more than made up for it with a tremendous display of hitting power. Despite notching only 12 hits, 5 of these were for extra bases (and usually came with RISP). Eric "Tico" Torres came a homerun shy of hitting for the elusive "cycle". The opposing pitcher issued an astonishing 11 walks, setting the stage for another Sac Lunch victory on this last day of May. The team now finds itself fighting for first place, riding a 3-game winning streak to a respectable 3-2 record. The huge showdown with D&S Miller Transport looms in the near distance, as months of shit talk between the two teams will finally come to a head this Sunday at 5pm.

Sac Lunch 17, Hillbillies 11

Recap: Sac Lunch improved to 2-2 with a convincing win over last-place team Hillbillies. The team was forced to rely on power hitting to overcome the usual problems of defensive errors and strikeouts. Cruising behind the hot bats of Aaron Melton and Matt Lefevre, the Sacs took the lead in the 2nd inning and never gave it up.

Game 3 - 5/10/09 - Result: W
Sac Lunch 10, Team Austin 9

Recap: Sac Lunch extended a huge middle finger to its critics last night, as it shocked the sellout crowd on Diamond 9 with a stunning come-from-behind victory over Team Austin. Down 9-1 in the bottom of the 5th inning, the Sacs poured on the offense over the next two innings, including a ridiculous 2 out, 5 run rally in the 6th to come away with a 10-9 victory, their first of the season. The fire and passion that seemed to be missing from the first two games was suddenly there, and Manager/Pitcher Corey Fields hopes to harness this energy all the way to the D-League championship.

Game 1 - 4/19/09 - Result: L
Sac Lunch 8, The Saints 15

Recap: On a damp, soggy night in April, Sac Lunch took the field to begin their highly-anticipated 2009 campaign. This season, nothing short of complete dominance was the expectation of Pitcher/Manager Corey Fields. However, the Softball Gods had other ideas. Marked by poor hitting, strkeouts, and continual errors in the field, Sac Lunch nonetheless stayed in the game until the final inning, thank to timely hits by Matt LeFevere, Eric "Tico" Torres, and Aaron Melton. Although a disappointing 2009 debut, most analysts cited the weather as a major factor in this game. Congratulations to Eric "Tico" Torres for reaching the 100 Career Hits milestone.
